Ovarian cyst rupture (part 2)

What are the options for treatment?

The treatment you receive for an ovarian cyst rupture will depend on the severity of your condition, the extent of damage caused by the rupture and upon whether or not there were any complications associated with the cyst.

If you are in an emergency situation, the initial treatment will simply be to stabilise your condition. Doctors will assess your airway, breathing and circulation, and may need to start you on intravenous treatment.

Antibiotics

In most cases of ovarian cyst rupture you will be started on antibiotics. In the short term, you may be treated with stronger antibiotics such as Gentamycin or its variants.

You may also receive a broad-spectrum penicillin variant as well as Metronidazole, which acts against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Treatment may also include Cefotetan, which targets gram-positive cocci bacteria and gram-negative rod bacteria.

If you are a pre-menopausal woman, your doctor is likely to want you to prevent ovulation. This will be achieved using oral contraceptive medication. This medication will reduce stimulation of the ovaries, which also reduces the risk of further cysts.

Since ruptured ovarian cysts are extremely painful, your doctor will want to help you manage your pain. The type of painkiller you are given will depend on the other medication you are taking. Preventing infection is the main concern, so doctors may change the type of painkillers you take as your antibiotics changes.

Surgery

In emergency cases you may have to undergo surgery to treat your ruptured ovarian cyst. This could result in the removal of one or both of your ovaries. Risks of ovarian surgery include the following:

- Ovarian cysts may come back after surgery
- Pain may not be controlled
- Infection may develop
- The bowel or bladder may be damaged during surgery

Both oral contraceptives and surgery will remove the cyst, but they have their side effects and don't always guarantee a permanent cure.

The only way to guarantee that your ruptured ovarian cyst gets permanently cured is to follow a natural program.

Natural Treatment

Along with the traditional ovarian cyst treatment options outlined below, some women opt for natural treatment. The aim of natural treatment is to permanently cure the ovarian cyst by dealing with the root cause of the problem. Unlike traditional treatment methods, natural treatment will permanently cure your ovarian cyst symptoms.
